Weightless is a choreography of air, movement, and a bed sheet that challenges what is made visible to the eye. The transformations of the bed sheet and the body play with possibilities for both taking and giving life within the longing and pressure of motherhood. The performance begins with one-on-one performances under the sheet, exploring consensuality and play.&#38;nbsp;

	The Heavy is a dance with two objects: a large canvas bag filled with rocks and gravel sewn shut and my grandmother’s handkercheif. Through a sequence of actions managing the weight, momentum, and fall of both objects, The Heavy seeks to tell stories of let downs.&#38;nbsp;

	Stages is a performance installation. I designed and helped build a simple platform stage out of palettes and plywood for the purpose of a performance art festival. Invited to contribute work, for the duration of 1 hour, I took the stage apart, disassembled the parts and re-arranged them into a make-shift shelter. I then invited audience members to pass through or spend time under and within the shelter. After which I recruited audience members to help me put the stage back together, teaching some individuals how to use the handheld power drill, screwing the ply back down, restoring it as a stage.&#38;nbsp;

	Wood and Wool is a 3-minute solo created for the HiSolo Series, curated by Devika Wickremesinghe and Alexx Shilling. Raw sheep’s wool is pulled out of from pockets, from under the arms, and from between the legs, and softly pushed into holes made by what was once knots in a thin plank of redwood. The plank is then balanced along the spine, while I crawl out on my hands and knees.&#38;nbsp;

	Paper Bags
Pieter Performance Space
Los Angeles, CA
2019
photographer: Kestrel LeahAs an object, paper bags are a complicated signifier, with important historical moments. Near the turn of the 20th century, young girls were working in factories at a young age. Margerat Knight began working in a cotton-mill factory at the age 12, and impressively set about making improvements to machinery. She invented an automated mechanism that could fold flat bottomed paper bags without error. She fought and proved herself in court to win her patent in 1871 - at a time in when not many women could own intellect property. In the earyl 1970’s mothers demanded brown-bag lunch program, as they were fighting there way into the workforce. They were expected to be at home, even mandated by law, to feed their children lunch during the school day. They protested by sending their children to school with lunch in a paper bag. The brown paper bag test beginning around the 1960’s was an oppressive demonstration of colorism and racism comparing a person’s skin color to that of a paper bag.Another complexity folded into my research, was examining blurred scenarios of sexual assault where women are often blamed. A common phrase used to objectify women in sex is to “put a bag over her head.”

	Paper Bags is a dark comedy. It engages viewers with the multiple senses, incites audience member participation, and plays with perceptions of sensuality.
Georgio Agamben writes that to meditate on Pulcinella, a commedia dell’arte character, is to ask, “Have I truly lived my life? Or is there still something left in it that I have not been able to live? This unlived is like a faceless stowaway who accompanies me day after day whom I am never able to catch and speak to. How much of my life belongs to me, how much to Pulcinella and how much to others? And what does it mean to live with something unlived”

	Magnetic is a site-specific and improvisational performance. It is an inquiry into being pulled and an invitation to notice the night air. It is a mediation on sexuality and outlines.&#38;nbsp;

Weekend at BereniceLos Angeles, CA
2019
performer: Jessica Hemingway

‘we can see you you can see us’ is a traveling performance for an outdoor public
space event. It a choreographic work that participates with distance and
proximity, beginning as far away as visibily possible and then moving in
close. As the performers near they drape the quilts over audience members
for one-on-one moments together. Performers carry the quilts with bells tied
around their waist that ring with each step and skip.

		<description>

	I create body-based performance art, using movement, everyday objects, sound, text and site-specific development.
I am interested in perceptions of the ordinary, material capabilities, and
audienceship.

Objects and materials
serve both in their stillness as images and also in movement and liveness with
performance. They make sound, disappear, transform, and reveal. My focus is not
solely with the body or with objects, but with the engaged and active space in
between the two. I work with everyday materials that are at once familiar and
yet not themselves. As an artist and designer, the tactile and sensorial
qualities are important both functionally and experientially. My
multidisciplinary processes include making clothing, building furniture and
constructing objects.

Movement, dance, and
choreography is created with scores for action, duration, image, and improvisation.
These constraints are supported by somatic study, and anatomical and energetic research.
Through this complexity I question the tools in which we use to navigate
between the inner and the outer.

Improvisation is a
practice of observing, listening and of participation. It is a place to
experience acknowledgement, unknowing, the effort to understand, and the
willingness to live.

I am interested in blurring the boundaries of the
performance space and acknowledging the physical exchange between performer and
viewer. My work considers spatial capabilities of ‘a stage’ as it lives in the
theatre, the gallery, and private and public space. I move between the intimacy
of one-on-one performances and the larger visibility of public space works.

Practice

1. Scores: structured
sequences of movement, language, sculptural arrangements, and
sound. Using logic and poetics to devise a notation system that structures
containers and frameworks for embodiment and action.

2. Body-Mind
Practices: Exploring a range of body-mind practices through
experiential learning that root the work in the body, drawing focus to systems, patterns, or expressions of movement and voice.&#38;nbsp;

3. Improvisation: The
practice of listening, observing, decision making, and unknowing.

4. Material
Sensability: Acknowledging and activating the environment, site,
materials, objects and sensory stimuli as contributions to the creative process
and context. 5. Intuition: Learning
to release the mind’s censors and strengthen the awareness of impulse and
intuition with automatic, stream of conscious or continuous writing, drawing,
voice, and movement.

6. Performance
 Ritual: Defining parameters of time and space for a shared event. Understanding the wider parameters, politics, and energetic potentional for performance.

7. Integration: Reflection
exercises that connect the practice to life.
